really raw depiction of the reality of people living in pakistan, intertwining perspectives of a trans dancer, a wife, and a husband. it all feels very real, maybe too real, and gut wrenching. but the real-ness of it has stuck with me. india is really attacking trans rights right now and i have been thinking about this movie a lot. i also think transness plays a role in hinduism and indian culture, and colonialism really tried its hardest (and succeeded) to wipe it out and replace that with a rigid victorian morality. you can see this play out in dance as well, especially indian classical dance. i think as someone who grew up in the states as part of the indian diaspora, is taking on a lot of different styles of dance, and is queer, this movie really stuck with me.
